Description of Beneath a Steel Sky

Revolution followed up on the heels of underrated fantasy adventure Lure of The Temptress with this excellent cyberpunk adventure that to this day ranks among the best cyberpunk games ever made.

Beneath a Steel Sky begins with a simple premise that gradually unfolds to include a lot of subtle threads and interesting plot twists: you play Robert Foster, a down-trodden citizen of the oppressive futuristic city that any fan of Orwell's 1984 will immediately recognize. In a quest to find your long-lost father, you will encounter many colorful characters and solve many gadget-oriented puzzles. Revolution's 'virtual theatre' engine introduced in Lure of The Temptress has been significantly improved this time around-- characters follow their own agenda, and the solutions to many puzzles require astute observation and timing skills to disrupt their routine. One of the game's best features is Joey, your talkative droid sidekick whose wry remarks and wacky sarcasm will bring a smile to any Infocom fan who misses Floyd the robot in Planetfall, and help lighten the game's 'dark' atmosphere. Puzzles are generally logical if a bit on the easy side, with the exception of very clever puzzles in the game's cyberspace world. The game is replete with well-written dialogues and excellent artwork by the famed British comic book artist Dave Gibbons (whose work is one of the best introduction sequences seen in a computer game). A must-play for all cyberpunk fans and everyone else.

Note: In July 2003, Revolution not only released both the CD-ROM version and the floppy version into the public domain - they also gave the ScummVM team the source code to run with their wonderful interpreter. Thanks to both ScummVM team and Revolution for this incredible news :)

I would like to note, since no one else has, the version that GOG has is provided for free. Torrent devexpress 15 17. I even checked to be sure whether it is free, or it just was free when I got my account, but it is and has been for years available for free with a GOG account, along with at least a dozen others.

For those having trouble running this on Win7/8 try downloading SCUMMVM (google it) this runs most old point n click adventure games like Monkey Island etc. It also runs Beneath a Steel Sky fine..

Good game.. Although puzzles are REALLY hard for someone who's new to adventure games.
I love the little 'pet robot' that follows you around!

Good game.
Some of the puzzles in the beginning of the game are hard. In a few of the early places, you have no clue what to do next.. And in one of those early places it is really difficult to see in the image the element that you must activate. However the rest of the game is really good, with lots of humour.
Don't hesitate to use a walkthrough.

Great game, hours of fun game play, mostly challenging into making hilarious impossible connections, and you just have to love the ever complaining little robot who thinks he's the world.. yet still grudgingly obeys your commands.
This one, stays epic.

This chapter explains everything there is to know about the controls in Beneath a Steel Sky and how you steer all actions. Because your mouse only has 2 buttons (and a scrollwheel) it is not that hard to get things done. Monkey Island (especially the 3rd part) was harder in that aspect. So after reading this page you should be able to handle the controls in Beneath a Steel Sky flawless, so go on, read the page and enjoy the animated inventory gif I made only for this page.
And remember that ScummVM allows you to switch the game to fullscreen by pressing Alt+Enter (and back again). And P pauses the game, but this is one of the not that important aspects of the Controls in Beneath a Steel Sky. The really interesting part follows:

1. Gamescreen

The first Chapter of the CONTROLS Section is all about what happens in the gamescreen and what happenes if you do something. After all you don't have that many choices of what to do. To be precice, you only have three options. Here are all three options.
Beneath1st Action
Touch an Object with the Cursor:
  • Show what it is.

2nd Action
Click with the right Mousebutton:
  • use and/or pick up
Foster decides himself what he will do with the object.

3rd Action Click with the left Mousebutton:
  • Look at

That's all you can do with the combination of Mouse and brain.
Sky Okay, one more, if you move your cursor above another person and click a mouse button Foster will start to talk to this person and if you click somewhere, where there is no object or person but Foster can walk to he indeed will walk there.

2. Inventory

You can access your Inventory in Beneath a Steel Sky by dragging the Mouse to the upper end of the screen.
The Inventory window rolls down. You just have to watch this and then choose the Item you would like to use. You do this as described in Controls in Gamescreen. The only difference here is, that you must keep the left Mousebutton pressed to read what the object is. When you release the button the words explaining the object disappear.
Once you selected an item with the right mouse button you can drag it over objects on screen and use or combine it with them or give it to other persons on screen.
Thanks to Daniel for the following info on the mobile version of BASS (per mail):
To use an inventory item on the Android/iOS Version under ScummVM, on the ReRelease or the GOG Version (that is based on ScummVM) you have to use two fingers. Keep the first finger pressed on the item and click with the second finger anywhere else on the screen to select the item. Now it is selected and you tap on the location on the screen to use it there.
If you know any better, or more about another version, write me or discuss it in the Comments.
If you are still having problems with the controls of BASS under Android, take a look at the ScummVM Guide for Android, also check out the ScummVM on Android Controls Guide. If all this doesn't work for you, try installing the Android ScummVM Touchmod, this turns your android screen into a touchpad..

3. Menu

You access the Menu by pressing F5.

  • Music Volume
You can't turn off the music completely, but you can turn it quieter and louder.
  • Gamespeed
If Foster is walking too slow for you, you put that switch to the very top and after this he definitely won't be to slow for you anymore.
Some riddles in this game are structured in a way, that you need to do something fast, while something else is happening. In this case you'll have to set the gamespeed to veeeeeeeeeeery veeeeeeeeeeeeeeery slow. This way you can set Foster and the game to run slower (running slower, yeah) or set the game and Foster to run faster. Don't panic, and don't forget your towel, I will explain this in the walkthrough when needed.
  • back to the game
That's a good thing to ask, eeeehrm, I mean that's a good thing, that you found that button, use this button to get back to the game.

@Daniel if the question is in fact how to open the menu on Android, you use the Android menu button (or screen symbol) instead of F5
